Content Considerations For Premarital Education
Introducing new content on the issues that participants identified as final straws in their marriages may also be beneficial. These issues were infidelity, aggression or emotional abuse, and substance use. Addressing these behaviors directly in relationship education raises some questions regarding which couples relationship education providers might seek to help stay together as opposed to help break-up. We believe premarital education should serve as a prevention effort to help healthy and happy couples stay that way and that keeping distressed, abusive, or otherwise unhealthy couples together would not be a positive outcome. Research on the development of these final straw behaviors seems particularly important in the future. A limitation of the current study is that the pre-intervention assessment did not include the kinds of measures necessary to determine the extent to which couples in this study presented with these problems before marriage. Thus, future research is needed to investigate whether premarital education can help prevent couples from developing some of these final straw behaviors and whether it may help some couples with problems such as aggression or substance abuse either get the additional help they will need to change these behaviors or break up. We discuss preliminary ideas about whether/how premarital education might cover each of these final straw issues below.
The Problems Associated With Debt
Debt is a mounting problem in our culture. Go online and search for news articles regarding student loans or credit card debts being on the rise, and you are sure to find many, many news outlets who are prepared to say the same thing to you. Even if you view student loan debt as a necessary evil, it is still a topic that can create difficulties in your marriage. The student loan debt you or your spouse has taken on can prevent you from getting approved for a mortgage or a business loan. In an immense picture sense, constantly paying off debts will mean that you can never use your income to do what you should be doing as you get older- growing your familys wealth.
So, what can you do about your debt situation? One solution would be to make a concerted effort to pay off that debt in tandem with your spouse. Getting on a budget is not only a great way to begin to work on paying off debts, but it can also be a helpful tool for strengthening your marriage. Marriage counselors and therapists will tell you that budget building is an effective tool for teaching spouses who have problems communicating with one another.

When you deal with something in your over and over, it stands to reason that you would have an increased chance of experiencing conflict over it. Probably not a lot of people fight with their spouse about who gets to drive the yacht, but fighting over daily use of money stands to get a lot of air time.
Bring two people together and youre guaranteed a difference of opinion at some point. She thinks their budget would look better if he took his lunch every day instead of eating out at work. He thinks she could grab a cup of coffee at home each morning versus spending $5 a day at the drive-thru. And so it begins.
Solution: Address issues as they arise. Dont let them fester or build. If your spouse doesnt seem to think its an issue, but it bothers you its worth discussing.

“If one partner spends without thought and the other frantically saves every penny, there’s bound to be tension. The spender may feel that his or her partner is constantly nagging and cheap, while the saver may feel vulnerable to the effects of overindulging.”
