Does God Allow Separation In Marriage
No, God does not permit separation in marriage. Marriage was established by God to be a lifelong commitment . As a result, divorce is forbidden by God. Divorce is something that even Jesus Christ despises .
While some people desire seclusion in order to find peace and happiness, the Bible states that the wicked will not find peace . In fact, we are cautioned that doing bad things and breaking Gods rules will lead to death . There is, however, some good news. Now and forever, we can enjoy true happiness and peace in our lives. How? We have the ability to obey God. Please read our page on Is there hope beyond death? to discover more about this life-changing revelation.
The Covenant Of Marriage
The marriage covenant is a solemn promise made between the bride and groom before God. When you enter into a Christian marriage covenant, you are bringing God into the equation you are drawing His presence and power over your relationship. As you make and keep your vows before God, you are inviting God to bless your marriage and make you strong against the devils attempts to derail your relationship.
The covenant is your pledge to stick with the marriage even when youre in conflict or when seemingly-insurmountable problems arise. You work hard to not only stay in the marriage but to thrive in the bond you have made. As you honor each other and your covenant, God will honor you.
The marriage covenant is all about commitment which does not mean gritting your teeth and just hanging in there. It means you actively work to make your relationship more intimately connected. You choose to be patient, forgiving, and kind, and you make your marriage something worth protecting and cherishing.
. . . a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This is a profound mysterybut I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
2. Matthew 19:6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.
5. Ephesians 5:21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Bible Verses For Broken Marriages
As someone in his 22nd year of marriage, I can testify to this: There are no perfect marriages and no perfect people. In a marriage that works, you will find two people who have many stories to tell of trials theyve endured and choices they made not to give up on each other. In my own marriage, I have given my wife ample opportunities to choose to move forward with me, and although not in as great a quantity, she has given me opportunities, too.
But the reason our marriage is a success is not because of perfection. Its a success because when it has been broken, we each decided our union is greater than either of us on our own. We decided, inspired by our faith, to work on our relationship. You can do that, too. When your marriage is broken, you can start by using these 10 Bible verses for broken marriages.

Divorce In The New Testament
Jesus clarified the Pharisees questions about Deuteronomy 24 in Matthew 19:9, And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.
Jesus made it clear that if a husband divorces his wife to marry another woman, he is committing adultery against his first wife because, in Gods eyes, he is still married to his first wife. The same holds true for a wife who divorces her husband and marries another man. If a woman divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.
In the eyes of God, the only thing that breaks that covenant is sexual immorality. What God has joined together, let no man separate.
This binding covenant concept is repeated in 1 Corinthians 7:39: A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, as long as he belongs to the Lord. Note that God wants Christians to marry Christians!
33. Mark 10:2-6 Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife? 3 What did Moses command you? he replied. 4 They said, Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away. 5 It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law, Jesus replied. 6 But at the beginning of creation God made them male and female.
34. Matthew 19:9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.
Does God Want Me To Stay In An Unhappy Marriage

Many Christians have tried to justify a non-biblical divorce by saying, I deserve to be happy. But you cant truly be happy unless you walk in obedience and fellowship with Christ. Maybe the question should be, Does God want my marriage to remain unhappy? The answer, of course, would be, No! Marriage reflects Christ and the church, which is the happiest union of all.
What God wants you to do if your marriage is unhappy is work on making it happy! Take a close look at your own actions: are you loving, affirming, forgiving, patient, kind, and unselfish? Have you sat down with your spouse and discussed what is making you unhappy? Have you sought counseling with your pastor?
45. 1 Peter 3:7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
46. 1 Peter 3:1 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives.
47. Colossians 3:14 In addition to all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.
48. Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
49. Mark 9:23 If you can? said Jesus. Everything is possible for one who believes.

Lack Of Commitment To The Marriage
Several years ago, in the midst of a midlife crisis, God impressed upon me that he had provided everything I need in my wife. Put into that perspectivethat your wife is a tremendous blessing from the Lord in every way. Knowing that, a man can pour his whole heart into committing to being all she needs him to be, too.
Luke 1: 18 Adultery As A Reason
Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.
~ Luke 16:18
After a divorce, Jesus appears to declare an absolute prohibition against remarriage.
You shouldnt do that since youll be engaging in adultery. This is something we see in Mark as well.
God created marriage to be a permanent institution between one man and one woman for the rest of their lives, Jesus reminds them.

What freedom does an abandoned spouse have? What if the leaving spouse is a believer?
âIf your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. Eleven Reasons Why I Believe All Remarriage After Divorce Is Prohibited While Both Spouses Are Alive
1. Luke 16:18 calls all remarriage after divorce adultery.
Luke 16:18: Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
1.1 This verse shows that Jesus does not recognize divorce as terminating a marriage in God’s sight. The reason a second marriage is called adultery is because the first one is considered to still be valid. So Jesus is taking a stand against the Jewish culture in which all divorce was considered to carry with it the right of remarriage.
1.2 The second half of the verse shows that not merely the divorcing man is guilty of adultery when he remarries, but also any man who marries a divorced woman.
1.3 Since there are no exceptions mentioned in the verse, and since Jesus is clearly rejecting the common cultural conception of divorce as including the right of remarriage, the first readers of this gospel would have been hard-put to argue for any exceptions on the basis that Jesus shared the cultural assumption that divorce for unfaithfulness or desertion freed a spouse for remarriage.
2. Mark 10:11-12 call all remarriage after divorce adultery whether it is the husband or the wife who does the divorcing.
2.1 This text repeats the first half of Luke 16:18 but goes farther and says that not only the man who divorces, but also a woman who divorces, and then remarries is committing adultery.
2.2 As in Luke 16:18, there are no exceptions mentioned to this rule.

The Meaning Of Any Cause Divorce

This was a shocking statement for the crowd and for the disciples. It meant they couldnt get a divorce whenever they wanted itthere had to be a lawful cause. It also meant that virtually every divorced man or women was not really divorced, because most of them had any cause divorces. Luke and Matthew summarized the whole debate in one sentence: Any divorced person who remarried was committing adultery , because they were still married. The fact that they said any divorced person instead of virtually all divorced people is typical Jewish hyperbolelike Mark saying that everyone in Jerusalem came to be baptized by John . It may not be obvious to us, but their first readers understood clearly what they meant.
Within a few decades, however, no one understood these terms any more. Language often changes quickly . The early church, and even Jewish rabbis, forgot what the any cause divorce was, because soon after the days of Jesus, it became the only type of divorce on offer. It was simply called divorce. This meant that when Jesus condemned divorce for any cause, later generations thought he meant divorce for any cause.

I Remarried After Divorce Should I Divorce Or Separate From My New Spouse Should I Go Back To My First Spouse
To the married I give this commandnot I but the Lordthat the wife should not separate from her husband , and that the husband should not divorce his wife.
However, Paul was writing about the case where a couple has separated but have not divorced and remarried. The additional sin of another divorce and the emotional pain caused to the current spouse and others involved would violate other Bible principles. In most cases, the first marriage could not be restored. When these factors are considered, intentionally breaking up a second marriage seems like an unworkable and unwise choice.

Matthew 1: 9 Divorce Because Of Immorality
And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
~ Matthew 19:9
The Pharisees question is answered directly by Jesus in this bible passage. Jesus is addressing the issue of men divorcing their wives.
Adultery is committed by a man who divorces his wife for any reason other than sexual immorality and marries another woman.
In other cases except for sexual immorality, Jesus proclaims divorce to be unacceptable.
Jesus Specifically Allowed Divorce For Infidelity
Matthew 19:9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.
Note that Jesus does not say this is the only reason for divorce. We find other reasons for divorce in Scripture. For a quick 7-minute video explanation by Rev. Dr. David Instone-Brewer of Cambridge, see this.

Against The Liberalizing Of Scripture
As he did with the sixth and seventh command, so he is doing with a command of God found in Deuteronomy 24. Lets take a look at that passage, Deuteronomy 24:14, the passage Jesus cites:
When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, and if she goes and becomes another man’s wife, and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the LORD. And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance.
-Deuteronomy 24:14
This passage is a fairly straightforward requirement in the Mosaic Law, forbidding remarriage to a divorced spouse after they have remarried someone else. But there was a controversy in Jesus day about one part of the passage, a controversy that fundamentally centered around what we might call liberalizing of the Scriptures.
Jesus rebukes this idea in our text this morning, rebukes those who would liberalize the law. What does it mean to liberalize the Scriptures?
